From My Least Favorite to My Favorite Room!

We have lived in this house for 24 years and I have never really liked our den. That is until now. Now, I love it!

Before I show you everything, I’m going to give you some teasers and a warning. The warning is I’m not quite finished with it. There is still a blank wall I need to fill, but I have a project in mind for it.

My before den.

family room decorating ideasThis room isn’t very big. When you factor in all the different openings/doors to this room, it doesn’t leave too many ways that the furniture can be arranged.  All these years, I have had the sofa and chairs shoved against these two walls. You can see one opening in this picture. Now imagine an opening to the breakfast room to the right of the picture and the backdoor to the opposite of the opening you can see. That was where I was standing to take the picture.

Now for the teasers.

family room decorating ideasFirst, I made slip covers for the two pre-owned couches. People have asked me why white. Well, white goes with everything. I can take them off to wash them and I can bleach them if needed. I think white looks clean and crisp. Besides, when we don’t have company, I keep the seats covered because I like to prop me feet on the couch, not to mention MM can come home really, really dirty some days.

I made them from painters drop clothes.

Small den decorating I bleached them white. I used three of them and they were about $26 each.

family room decorating ideasI move the hutch from the foyer to this corner.

family room decorating ideasI moved the old milk can from behind the backdoor to the side of the hutch.

family room decorating ideasMM’s bottles were moved from the wall to above the door. He made the shelf for them to sit on. I plan on doing a post to show you how to build them. So easy! He also built the one in the background.

family room decorating ideasThe arch/shelf isn’t new. MM built it years ago to solve my dilemma of having to paint all the downstairs the same color. It helps to divide the den from the foyer and hallway.

family room decorating ideasThis little thing, which I found at a yard sale and have no idea what it is, I just liked it, was moved from the hallway to a wall.

family room decorating ideasI hung my all time favorite yard sale find back up in here. I’m still mad at myself for breaking the original globe!

family room decorating ideasThe table we bought back in May is still in it’s corner, but not used as a TV stand anymore. And I am loving how the curtain hides the router and all the wires that used to show.

Teased enough? Okay! Here is the room now, from the four different corners.

family room decorating ideasAs you walk into the back door. I am in love with the curtains. They are really table clothes I found here.

family room decorating ideasFrom the breakfast room. I have always wanted a couch where the one closest to you is. I think it makes the room feel cozy and inviting.

family room decorating ideasWalking through the front opening. The mantle looks so empty right now. I actually have it decorated for fall, but took everything down so it wouldn’t look too seasonal. There are still a few hints of the season. Can you find them? Oh and MM built the mantle too. Years ago!

Standing in the window corner. I warned you about the blank wall. The TV is in a temporary state. We are trying to decide if we should hang it on the wall. I am so glad we waited on that. Let me show you why.

family room decorating ideasWe came across this beaut! It is the perfect width and height to be used as a TV stand. MM is going to sand it, patch the holes, take off the bottom that was added, paint it and add a board where the original drawer is missing. Not to close it in, but so that we can put the satellite receiver where the drawer used to be. Now the TV will be a little higher and not have to be hung, putting more holes in the wall.

You won’t believe how much it cost us! NOTHING!! We were taking some junk to the dump including some metal. Right in front of the dump there is a “flea market” where people set up on the weekends to have a yard sale. We were having to wait for another person to get off the scales at the dump and while we were waiting a man asked if he could have the metal. We gave it to him. After we threw away our stuff, we hit the yard sale. MM saw this, asked how much and the guy said $5. Then he recognized MM, for giving him the metal, and just gave it to us! I would have gladly paid the five bucks!! That was a steal!

OH! My plans for the blank wall. I want to make a large clock to go up there. I think. haha. By the time I get to that project I may have changed my mind. I may just put the three small shelves that held the bottles back up with other stuff on them. What do y’all think?

It has taken me a while to get the room like this. I’ve been working on it since August. I freshened the paint. It took two weeks just to make the slip covers. I had to save to get the curtains. I made the pillows. But the wait has been worth it.

I’ve seen some changes in myself since August as well. I have asked God to make me a wife of noble character. In other words, a Proverbs 31 woman. He has shown me some attitudes that need to go to the dump. He has rearranged some beliefs to be more in line with Him. He is decorating me with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. I am learning to be more obedient to Him. The Proverbs 31 woman seems perfect, and maybe she is, but aren’t all things possible for God. If He wants me to be a woman of noble character, then that’s what He will cause me to become.

Hope you all have a great week!

Until next time!

The room looks great, and I love how you did it on a budget!

    • Jayne says:

Thank you, Kim! Sometimes I wish I could afford to have an interior designer come in and do it for me, but then I wouldn’t have the satisfaction of having done it myself and not spending a small fortune on it.

  2. the room looks GREAT… they say you should shop your own home first and you did a very good job of that… the room looks inviting. take care and God Bless

I just came across your ‘little corner of the world’ via Pinterest and your entry on decorating when you have no money! The job you did on your den is amazing! Isn’t it wonderful how, when we were young we got to color, paint, etc. for the fun of it, and now as adults, God allows us to continue our ‘creativity’ by giving us homes to decorate and turn in to save havens for our families???

I’m so glad God led you to my little corner of the blog world. It’s such a huge world! Thank you for your sweet comment! Right now we are working on the outside of the house. I haven’t written a post in over a year. Waiting in the hallways, as they say, for God to show me what He wants me to do with this little corner of the blogging world. What you said about God allowing “us to continue our “creativity” by giving us homes to decorate” was just what I needed to hear today! Thank you! Blessings to you as well!

Hearing from you makes my day!
